Quini

Quini is the app for running football pools with friends: everyone predicts, live scores arrive automatically, and the leaderboard updates itself. It is also the product built by HopperCat's own founder — our most demanding client and our production lab.

A deadline that doesn't move

Almost every launch can slip two weeks. The World Cup can't.

On June 11 the wave arrived, ready or not. That deadline brought three pressures at once:

  • An unpredictable spike. At peak, 8 in 10 active pools were World Cup pools. Kickoff week alone brought 5,000+ signups.
  • An audience that stopped being Mexican. Ten-plus countries, three languages, three currencies.
  • A small team. No option to throw ten people at the problem.

The app during the World Cup: live standings, chat and stats

How we approached it

The same five-step methodology we use with any client, compressed to the scale of the deadline:

  1. Diagnosis. What broke under load, and what was missing to operate outside Mexico.
  2. Strategy. Prioritize ruthlessly against the date: hold the wave first, capitalize second.
  3. Execution. AI-assisted delivery, to move at a speed a small team normally can't reach.
  4. Measurement. Every install, signup and purchase attributed, deduplicated across browser and server.
  5. Optimization. Read the data live and cut what wasn't converting, with the tournament still on.

The octopus

The rebrand wasn't just a new logo. Quini gained a mascot with a personality of its own — an octopus — and with it a content line that produces fast and behaves like social content rather than advertising.

Three pieces from the “El pulpo reacciona” series, produced during the tournament.

Reacting the same day to what happened on the pitch only works if production is cheap and fast. That was the bet: a mascot that can answer a match while people are still talking about it.

The results

Verified against production data, April 20 to July 23, 2026.

Nearly 2,400 World Cup pools out of 3,000+ total. 600,000+ predictions and nearly 15,000 pool entries. More than 20,000 people used the platform; 12,000+ accounts were registered.

On kickoff day, nearly 4,500 players opened the app, holding above 4,000 a day through the group stage. It stopped being a Mexican product: players in 10+ countries, about 40% outside Mexico.

In paid acquisition, installs at $0.28 with a 6.2% CTR. And the business followed the audience: June revenue was 8.6× May.

The proof of the AI-first method is velocity: nearly 1,600 commits in 90 days, 829 in June alone, with a small team.

What we won't claim

The World Cup brought the wave. We didn't create it, and it would be dishonest to say otherwise.

Our job was different: to be ready to hold it, convert it and measure it. The difference between a spike that gets wasted and one that leaves behind accounts, revenue and a product running in three languages is what was built before it arrived.

What this means for your brand

If this can be done under World Cup pressure, it can be done for your brand without it.

One concrete example: with white-label pools, your business can run its own on its own subdomain, with your logo and colors. An engagement mechanic ready for hotels, restaurants and consumer brands that want to activate an audience around football.
